Madrona Library
Project Description
The renovation of the Madrona Branch of the Seattle Public Library was conducted under the “Libraries for All” building program, the largest and most comprehensive library initiative in our country’s history. Originally a fire station built in 1919 the building was converted to a library in 1986. The branch is located across the street from an elementary school and primarily houses a children’s collection of books and resources. The renovation included a complete re-do of the interior layout and finishes, a new entry and awning, new signage, and structural, mechanical and electrical upgrades. A storyteller’s window seat occupies the former fire truck garage door opening. Economy, durability, efficiency factored large in the development of architectural solutions since much of the resources allocated to the project were absorbed in the repair and restoration of the very compromised old building. The branch is one of the smallest in the city with all of its public functions contained in one room.
